Originally built in 1799 as a carriage house, the building was converted to a day hotel in 1826 to cater to New York City's growing middle class, a result of the increase in trade from the opening of the Erie Canal.  Through its eight fully-furnished period rooms, the Museum explores travel, leisure, work and play in diverse antebellum New York.
